A simple system of scoring food businesses for hygiene and
legal compliance - why not find out the "scores on the doors" for
your favourite restaurant, bar or cafe?
How food premises are rated
A scheme to make food hygiene inspection results available to
the public, by displaying them at the premises and publishing them
on our website. Premises will continue to be assessed for food
safety practices, the condition and cleanliness of the structure
and equipment, and confidence in the management systems - but the
scoring system will now be more straightforward.
We have always 'scored' these matters using the national food
safety risk rating scheme, however, this national scheme is quite
complex and so to make matters easier for the public to understand,
these scores will now be translated into star ratings.
What the star ratings mean:
Making our findings available to you
The business will be issued with a certificate detailing the
rating that they have been given. They will be asked to display the
certificate at the premises - and we will also publish the
certificate on our website. This represents a significant change in
our approach and gives the you much more information about the
business you are intending to buy food from.
Star ratings are published for premises inspected since
01/04/2007. This includes virtually every restaurant,
takeaway, chip shop and hot food outlet. Further Star ratings will
be added at the beginning of each month as we are currently in the
process of inspecting and issuing reports to all food businesses.
If you cannot find the particular business that you are looking for
it is because it has not been inspected under the scheme yet.

The information on this site has been gathered by
officers from Environmental Services Food and Workplace
Safety Team in the course of their inspections. Inspections are
carried out in accordance with Food Safety Legislation, and the
Food Standards Agency Code of Practice. This website is updated
monthly but food premises may only be inspected once in every 6-36
months as specified in the Food Standards Agency Code of
Practice.
The score given to food premises on the site has been based on the
latest inspection carried out by the Council and as such it
represents the situation as found by the Officers on the day of
that inspection. Therefore the score may not be representative of
the overall, long term food hygiene standards of the premises and
should not be relied on as a guide to food safety.
All entries made on the site are checked for accuracy, we make
every effort to maintain the accuracy of the information provided.
