Black Bin Collection

We operate a kerbside collection of household waste and provides black wheeled bins free of charge to residents.

The bins are emptied every two weeks by a dedicated collection service and the waste is transported to the purpose built transfer station at Red Lodge, where it is checked and bulked for transportation to the landfill site at Great Blakenham.

During 2009/2010, 11,697 tonnes of household waste was collected from the Forest Heath district for land filling.

A waste analysis showed that approximately 60% of the waste stream can be recycled and we are hoping that through the use of blue and brown bin collections we can achieve a recycling/composting rate of 60%.

Household waste tips

Please follow the advice below when using your black bin:

Do not overfill your bin or make it too heavy. Excess household waste can be taken to your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre, or subject to prior agreement may be placed in your neighbour's bin.

  • Please put your bin out at the correct location, on your designated collection day by 6.30am. Return your bin as soon as possible following collection. Do not leave your bin out any longer than it needs to be!
  • Only place the correct waste material in the bin.
  • Do not place waste beside the bin for collection - we do not accept 'side waste'.
  • Please put your house name/number on your bin for ease of recognition.
  • We are unable to recycle plastic carrier bags. Please re-use them, return them to the supermarket or use to wrap your black bin waste.
  • Forest Heath is now recycling 47% of all household waste.

  • Black bin waste reduction tips
  • Take glass and textiles to a recycling site instead of putting them in your black bin
  • Buy products that have less packaging. Buying loose fruit and vegetables will cut down on polystyrene and cellophane waste, giving you more room in your black bin
  • If you have small children in nappies, consider using re-usable cloth nappies which will cut down on waste and save you money!
  • Wrap up waste such as meat, fish and bones before putting in the black bin. This will help contain smells, and is also a good way to re-use carrier bags
  • Use a home composter to transform green kitchen and garden waste into soil improver or green top
  • Use re-usable carrier bags which can be bought for a small price from any supermarket. This will mean you have fewer carrier bags to dispose of.
