Street Lighting

If a light goes out in your street, who do you call to fix it?

The majority of street lights in our district are owned and maintained by Suffolk County Council. They have a plastic plate attached to the lamp column together with a reference number for the column, the freephone number to report your fault is 0800 591055.

Forest Heath District Council owns 179 street lights and each one displays the council crest. These lights are found in some car parks and town centres. Please call 01638 719000 to report a fault.

Lights in garage blocks and on estates now belong to Kings' Forest Housing and you can phone 0845 6013390 to report faults.

Other lights are owned by the relevant parish or town councils.

When reporting a street light fault, please have the following information ready:

  • As much information as possible about the fault, for example, is the light not working at all, is it an intermittent fault or is the light staying on during the day (daylight burning)?
  • The street light number, which can be found on the light post itself. If you don't know the number, please give some other means of locating the light such as a nearby house number.

Play Your Part

Suffolk County Council is working together with district and borough councils, police Safer Neighbourhood Teams, Neighbourhood Watch volunteers and local residents to improve community safety, tackle anti-social behaviour and bring down crime. You can also use 'Play Your Part' to report street light problems on 01473 264658, the County Council will then direct the report to the correct agency.
