Mildenhall, a town mentioned in the Doomesday Book 1086, is an
attractive, small medieval market town - surrounded by the River
Lark. Famous as the location of RAF Mildenhall, one of the
United States major bases in the UK. You cannot help but notice the
accents of our american cousins, and the occasional low flying
aircraft.
Mildenhall is an ideal place to stay to visit other nearby historic
towns such as Ely, Bury St Edmunds, Lavenham, Newmarket, and the
university city of Cambridge. Thetford Forest is a short
drive or cycle ride to enjoy walks and wildlife.
In King Street you will find the Mildenhall Museum which
has some excellent displays of times past, the local wildlife,
the history of the RAF base, and, information on the 'Mildenhall
Treasure', a world famous horde of 4th century Roman silver
tableware found nearby in about 1942.
A new Mildenhall Tourist Point will, from 2008, be housed within
the town's bus station, this will be a central point for
visitors and locals to gather local information.
The market is on Fridays, offering everything from fruit &
vegetables to clothing & tools. The importance of the
Friday market established by Royal Charter in 1412 was confirmed in
the 15th century by the construction of the market cross. The
parish pump still stands in the market place, as a reminder that
pipped water was not available until the 1940's.
Nearby, Mildenhall Stadium offers greyhound racing - held bi-weekly
on Mondays and Fridays at 7.30pm. Stockcar racing - held
every other Saturday and Motocross held every Sunday at
10am.
