FREE portable ashtrays are being given
away in Forest Heath this summer, in a campaign to ensure that
cigarette ends are properly disposed of.
Forest Heath District Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council
are working in partnership on the No Excuses campaign. Councillor
Peter Stevens, Chairman of the councils' Joint Waste Committee,
said: “As part of our No Excuses campaign we are combating the
myths around litter. Some people think that as cigarette ends are
so small they are quick to degrade and it doesn’t matter if they
leave them on the ground. In fact they are made from plastic and
can take 80 years to break down. And being difficult to pick up,
they tend to accumulate, blocking drains and leaking contaminants.
Sweeping them up is a cost born by all Council Taxpayers, although
only a small number of people litter.”
The two councils have also joined forces with local publicans to
end the blight of dropped cigarette butts. They are doing this by
targeting smokers in pub gardens across the district, providing
posters, beer mats, personal ash trays and wall mounted cigarette
bins to get the message across.
Free portable ash trays are available from Forest Heath District
Council's Mildenhall offices in College Heath Road
.The No Excuses campaign will
take to the streets this month with the anti litter message and
free portable ashtrays being distributed on Tuesday 16 June in
Newmarket, Thursday 25 June in Brandon and Friday 26 June in
Mildenhall..
