A NEW species of life has been discovered, not in a remote
rainforest or at the bottom of the sea, but on a 700 year old oak
tree in Beck Row, Suffolk.
The new species is a lichen (latin name Psammina palmate
sp.) that has been intensely studied by scientists since being
found five years ago.
Lichen are two organisms living in harmony - a fungus providing
the home for algae (tiny plants) which photosynthesis sunlight to
provide food.
The Countryside Section at Forest Heath District Council
commented that the discovery shows that new species are surviving
right on our doorstep in Forest Heath and highlights the importance
of safe guarding our local natural heritage.
The ancient oak tree on which the lichen was found is one of
many that can be enjoyed at Aspal Close Local Nature Reserve.
