FOREST Heath District Council
is cracking down on people who put advertising signs by the side of
roads and in the
countryside. Companies
and individuals who put these signs up can expect to lose them and
face prosecution as the council works on one of its priorities - to
improve the streets and environment of Forest Heath.
The signs, which can vary from
banners to fly-posted A4 posters, rarely have the necessary
planning consents, are unsightly and distract drivers at busy road
junctions and on
roundabouts. Councillor
Tony Simmons, Member Champion for the Environment, said: "The
council is sending out a clear message that it will not tolerate
flagrant breaches of planning control and will take robust action
when necessary. Persistent offenders will be
prosecuted." The only
exceptions to this rule are signs promoting local charity and
community events. These can only be put up within two weeks of the
event and must taken down promptly
afterwards To date
enforcement officers have cleared over 30 signs ranging in size
from A4 posters to banners measuring around four metres by two
metres. Any company
or individual who has had their signs removed should contact
Malcolm Allison at Forest Heath District Council on 01638 719444 to
arrange collection.
