SEVEN Newmarket businesses have signed a pledge to tackle fast
food and drink related litter. The businesses have signed a
Voluntary Code which commits their support for Forest Heath
District Council’s No Excuses campaign.
Forest Heath Cllr Tony Simmons, Member Champion for the
Environment, was present at the signing ceremony on Tuesday and
said: “Nothing reflects more adversely on a fast food outlet than
irresponsible customers leaving their cartons on the pavement. I
welcome this voluntary code which means that outlets will work with
us to educate the public about litter and, hopefully, improve the
environment for all”.
The No Excuses campaign and the Voluntary Code have also
received backing from Newmarket Town Council and Newmarket Mayor,
Cllr Jane Bailey, was present at the signing.
The businesses who have pledged support for the Voluntary Code
are: A1 Confections, News Box, The Sandwich Mill, DW & RJ
Sweet, Coffee and Co, The Clock Tower Café and New Chevely
Stores.
The No Excuses campaign is a joint venture between Forest Heath
District Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council. It aims to
raise awareness of litter and is following themes highlighted by
the public as being of most concern – food and drink waste; dog
mess; cigarette butts and chewing gum.
