Rubbish Reuse

The re-use of products or materials that would otherwise become waste can provide a range of social, economic and environmental benefits. By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and reduce the impact on the earth.

This is an area where the voluntary and community waste sector has led the way. The sector has pioneered many of the services that are widespread today, such as the re-use of furniture and white goods.

Other common re-use activities range from donations to charity shops, to the re-use of mobile phones, PCs and toner cartridges, to more recent developments such as online auction and exchange sites like Freecycle; all of which are helping to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

A re-use donation box for staff and the general public has been introduced to the reception area at our main office in College Heath Road.  For a full list of what you can donate visit www.newmarketopendoor.org.uk.

John Durrant from the charity said “We are very pleased to be working with Forest Heath Council who have provided a convenient donation point and would like to thank the public for their support.” Newmarket Open Door would like to hear from any local businesses interested in setting up a donation point at their premises.

4. Choose2Reuse
Choose2Reuse is a brand that unifies charity shops, furniture reuse outlets and other community reuse organisations. Together we promote community reuse through the Choose2Reuse branding which is used on campaign materials and by licensed organisations such as charities, social enterprises and local authorities.

Part of the Choose2Reuse campaign is to raise awareness and provide opportunities to engage organisations and members of the public in supporting their local community's reuse schemes.

5. Eastex
Eastex is a free internet based service for businesses, schools, societies, voluntary organisations and individuals to help keep reusable items out of landfill.

A massive range of materials can be sourced or supplied through Eastex including batteries, building materials, drums, containers, electricals and electronics, furniture and fittings, metals, oils, paper and card, pallets, textiles and clothing, vehicle parts, wood and timber and much more!

Eastex is an Eastern Region project funded by BREW (Business Resource Efficiency & Waste) through the East of England Development Agency, East of England Regional Assembly, County Councils and partners in the Eastern Region. The project is supported by the Suffolk Waste Partnership among other key organisations and agencies.
