What is hazardous waste?
Hazardous Wastes, by their very nature, possess hazardous
properties. Some may present direct risk to human
health. Others have serious safety implications, for example
because they are highly flammable. Some hazardous wastes that
are toxic may present long-term risks to the
environment.
What types of waste are classed as hazardous?
- Vehicles at end of life
- Electrical equipment
- Fluorescent Tubes
- Waste containing Cathode Ray Tubes
- Contaminated Soils, Wastes
- Waste containing Heavy Metals and their compounds
- All Oils (except edible)
- Majority of Wood Preservatives
- Many Acids and Alkalis
- All Photographic Chemicals
How can I find out if the waste I produce is
hazardous?
You can find out if the waste you produce is hazardous by accessing
the European Waste Catalogue at the
DEFRA website. You will find all types of
hazardous waste listed with a three digit code number.
What should I do if I am a business who produces
hazardous waste?
There are new regulations regarding hazardous waste which came into
effect on the 16th July 2005. If you believe you are
producing more than 200kg of hazardous waste in a year you must
register each of the premises with the
environment agency, where you can also view
the new Hazardous Waste Regulations that took effect from 16th
July 2005. You can contact the environment agency on
08708 506 506 for further information and guidance.
All hazardous waste must be collected by a licensed contractor. At
present, Forest Heath District Council is not able to collect
hazardous waste, albeit we can provide advice and guidance on the
best way forward. Additional support is available from the
Environment Agency.
