Stray Dogs
Local authorities have a statutory duty in relation to
collection of stray dogs. We deliver this service through a local
kennels. Collection of stray dogs is carried out in Forest
Heath by a local kennels, with other aspects of responsible dog
ownership covered by Environmental Services. It is an offence
for an owner not to have control of their dog at all times.
To report a stray dog during normal
working hours you should contact Environmental Services on 01638
719733 for the dog to be collected. Between the hours of
17:00 -18:00 (mon-fri) and 09:00 - 12:00 (sat-sun) our kennels
can be contacted on 07518108764, and will be able to arrange for
collection of the dog.
FAQs
Q: What should I do if I lose my dog?
A: You should contact Environmental Services as soon
as you become aware that your dog is missing (if you are an
owner), or if you wish to report a stray dog.
Q: What happens when a dog is
found?
A: If a stray dog has identification, which it should have by law
through a suitable tag or microchip, we will attempt to return the
dog to the owner on the first occasion. If we are unable to return
the dog we will take the dog to our kennels. The dog will be kept
at our appointed kennels for seven days. Owners will be charged a
collection and kennelling fee which increases each day the dog is
kept; this may be avoided by tagging and microchipping your
dog. In cases where the dog is not claimed, it will be found
a new home wherever possible.
Q: Do I need to register my
dog?
A: The Council no longer runs a dog registration service, however
we recommend your dog is microchipped. Microchipping is a
relatively simple procedure carried out by most local Vets who will
insert a small, electronic device just under the skin of the dog.
If a dog strays it can be electronically scanned and therefore
identified. It is a painless, but effective process that will
ensure a lost dog may be returned to its owner as quickly as
possible. You can find out more about this from the
RSPCA.
Q: What about other complaints about
dogs?
A: We will also investigate complaints regarding dog fouling, keep
land reasonably clear of dog excrement, investigate complaints
relating to barking dogs and provide appropriate advice on
responsible dog ownership wherever possible.
