Smoke and Smells
We investigate complaints about smoke and smells. You can contact us if you are having problems and an officer will visit.
We may approach the person responsible in an attempt to resolve the complaint. A follow up letter would be sent to the person providing them with advice on how to control smoke or smells from their activities.
An abatement notice is served on the person responsible if the smoke or smell is witnessed causing a statutory nuisance.
In addition we investigate complaints about dark smoke under the Clean Air Act 1993. Under this Act it can be an offence if dark smoke is emitted from the chimney of any building.
If you are being bothered by burning of waste on commercial premises then you should consider contacting the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506 as they regulate the way in which waste is disposed of from such premises.
