We have responsibilities to monitor local air quality within the
district. The main pollutant of concern is nitrogen dioxide
(NO2) which mainly comes from vehicle fumes. High levels of
nitrogen dioxide can cause health problems, especially amongst
vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and those suffering
from respiratory illnesses.
Our monitoring has identified several locations
along the High Street and Old Station Road in Newmarket where the
level for NO2 is slightly higher than the level set by the
Government. It is therefore necessary to declare an Air
Quality Management Area (AQMA).
We are committed to maintaining good
air quality and establishing the AQMA will enable us to look
at ways of improving air quality in the location identified.
This will include:
- Consultation with agencies such as the Suffolk
Primary Care Trust
- Undertaking a detailed investigation of the air
quality
- Adopting an Action Plan with the aim of
improving air quality within the AQMA.
The health of our residents is our
main concern and we have arranged the following drop-in
session where we can answer any questions or concerns you may
have.
