- Watch your
backs
Many burglaries are committed by forcing back
doors, windows and patio doors because they are less visible from
the road. Protect your property by using good quality locks on
doors and windows and restrict access to the rear by locking side
gates. Remember to lock doors front and back even if you are inside
the property - an unlocked door can be an open invitation for
'walk-in' opportunist burglars
- Don't give them the tools for the
job
Spades, screwdrivers and similar tools left in
insecure sheds and garages can be used by the burglar. Make sure
your property is secure - shed alarms can be bought for under £10
from police stations.
- Join or start a Neighbourhood Watch
scheme
Neighbourhood Watch schemes not only mean
neighbours keep an eye on each other's property when they're away
or at work, they also promote community spirit and play a valuable
role in communication between residents and police, bringing
benefits for everyone. Ask the police for details of your local
Neighbourhood Watch group or visit
www.suffolk.police.uk/neighbourhoodwatch
where you can also follow a link to learn about the Data Link
Scheme, a simple but effective way of storing vital, life saving
information for use by the emergency services.
- Stop - Chain - Check burglars
conning their way in
Distraction burglars travel from town to town preying on elderly,
vulnerable people. You can help by looking out for elderly
neighbours or relatives and reminding them how to stop strangers
entering their homes by remembering the Stop - Chain - Check
message:
STOP and think before answering the door - are you expecting
anyone?
CHAIN or bar the door before you open it
CHECK caller's identification - if in any doubt, close the door and
phone the company the caller claims to be from using the number in
the telephone book, not on the caller's card. If you suspect you
have been targeted, alert the police immediately using 999
- Lock your bike - or lose
it
Don't leave your bike unattended and unsecured. Lock your cycle
even if you are only leaving it unattended for a few moments.
Postcode marking your bike at the cycle shop with a UV pen deters
thieves and makes identifying you properly far easier if it is lost
or stolen. UV pens cost around a pound from police stations.
- Be aware - Be
Streetwise
Be aware of who is near you when using
cash service tills, walking alone at night, or back to the car to
travel home. Personal attack alarms cost a few pounds from most
police stations.
Be wary of socialising in unfamiliar pubs/clubs and accepting
drinks from strangers. Be on your guard late at night - alcohol is
often linked to aggressive behaviour. Drivers should consider
carrying a mobile phone, and joining a recovery assistance service
in case of breakdown.
- It only takes a minute - to lose
your car
Think what you can do to secure your
vehicle. Never leave it unlocked and unattended, even for a few
minutes. Use a steering lock when you park, or get a car alarm with
an immobiliser fitted. Parking your vehicle in a well-lit
area.
- Don't let your mobile take a
walk
Leaving your mobile on show is asking a thief to take it off you.
Keep it out of sight and don't leave it in your car.
- Get Smart - steer clear of Vehicle
Crime
Remember to remove all valuables from your
vehicle. Thieves know where to look for purses, phones, cameras,
laptops etc. hidden under seats, coats or newspapers and can gain
access in seconds.
